263 www.medigraphic.org.mx Anatomista y cirujano irlandés. Nació en Cork, Irlanda, el 9 de abril de 1837 (Figura 1). Su padre era abogado. Asistió a la escuela Hamblin and Porter’s y al Instituto Académico en Hardcourt Street. A los 17 años ingresó al Trinity College de Dublín, donde estudió bajo la tutela de Robert Smith, quien lo introdujo en la ortopedia. Se graduó en 1859 como Bachiller en Medicina y Maestro en Cirugía, obteniendo su título de Doctor en Medicina (MD) en 1864. Se estableció en el Hospital Sir Patrick Dun para practicar cirugía, introdujo los conceptos de Lister de la antisepsia quirúrgica y realizó algunas osteotomías para corregir deformidades óseas como secuelas de raquitismo. Fue nombrado Profesor de Anatomía en 1873 y Jefe del Departamento en 1878, sucesor en este puesto a Barton hasta 1906. Fue presidente del Royal College of Surgeons de Irlanda y murió en Dublín el 21 de Junio de 1907. Bennett era un observador minucioso, digno y silencioso que reunió especímenes de fracturas y es recordado por su descripción de la fractura intraarticular de la base del pulgar (Figura 2).
